Costume, makeup and hair: Planning

Costume

In our film, we will be including a variety of different costumes to represent various ideas and stereotypes. These will be used as a tool for symbolism and visual stimulus. For example, the main character Martha will be wearing a white t-shirt and grey jeans. The connotations of white are: purity and innocence - something which is subverted in her psychopathic behaviours. We see her aggression and complete loss of control and conformity when she attacks her best friend, brutally beating him to death. Another reason we have used a white coloured costume on this character is so that the blood vividly shows up against it. This light backdrop will emphasise the significance of the blood. Lastly, being able to obviously see the blood will be suggestive of what's happening whilst she's stabbing him, in order for the film to suit the 15 age rating.

The character of Noah is initially mellow and kind hearted. We will capture his laid back nature and behaviour through his costume. By presenting him in blue trousers and a loose white shirt, the audience should get the impression that he is a relaxed character; unlikely to cause harm. We have decided to put him in blue and white costume rather than black to make him appear more harmless. This will then become a subversion of his actual character. The smart clothing that he wears will encourage him to stand out amongst the other characters in their lighter clothing. The darkness of his clothing in scenes where we see his darker nature is representative of his sinister character, and is also a tool that we will use to foreshadow his future in the film. The suit suggests wealth, formality and also power.  These are not something which would usually be suggestive along side innocents and therefore the contrast between the different connotations creates an uneasy opinion on the character; this is intended. Martha's best friend will wear the same outfit as the anonymous, which becomes an issue when telling them apart.

Makeup:  Martha's makeup will make her skin look very pale.  This will be done by using makeup too light for her skin tone.  The reasoning behind this is to maintain an look of innocence, untouched and purity. The lighter colour will also make her look drained, and support the idea of her becoming consumed by the death of her parents. An audience would get the impression that she is deeply effected by this event in her life, to the point where she is making herself ill. Then, the makeup for the girls at the party will be very bronzed and warm to contrast with Martha's look.  This is so that she looks unique so that it is clear to the audience she is not like everyone else; there is something different about her.
