Planning: Props

The first prop that we are going to use is a packet of Marlboro cigarettes. This prop will be used to develop the plot line. Noah will be the character who is seen with a packet. The symbolism of this packet enables us to foreshadow later events in the film. We will have to ensure that the packet features the writing 'Smoking kills'. A still shot of this will suggest that this message holds some significance. Likewise, the characters dependancy on this will develop the idea of venerability and a theme of addiction in the movie. We want this prop to highlight Martha's dependancy on figuring out who killed her parents and how she finds this addictive. Additionally, we will have with him, a packet of cigarettes to further contrast with the innocent character that he portrays to Martha. We will never see him smoking in scenes including Martha, therefore we know that he hides parts of his life from her. Close ups of the packet and reference to this prop will emphasise their significance as they help with Noah's character development.

The penknife will be seen with the character of Martha. This helps the audience to visualise her fear and aggression. The audience will only see this prop once she has been presented with the threat of the mysterious character, boasting the idea that she is easily agitated and likely to pursue her actions in order to protect herself.

An additional prop that we will use is an investigation board. The board will be featured in Martha's room and only revealed to the audience once she has accidentally attacked Ben.  Both the pen knife and the investigation board generate the idea of Martha being a suspicious and unstable character. The board is going to be very visual; using a lot of colour and images to translate it's purpose.
